Portia Jones is a Teaching Matters Early Reading Instructional Coach with over 15 years of experience in education and expertise in early childhood. She previously taught lower elementary as a General and Special Education ICT teacher and has coached teachers and administrators spanning pre-K through 12th grade in the public, charter and private school sectors for the past nine years as a consultant, Academic Dean and Director of Special Education. She has developed an elementary Common Core-aligned ELA curriculum that was implemented by teachers across NY, CT and RI. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Barnard College and an M.S.Ed from Bank Street College of Education. Her passion for education stems from her personal experiences and work with schools and organizations across the globe including Chicago, Boston, London and Kenya. However, she has particular interest in supporting equity and access to quality instruction in urban school communities such as those in her hometown: New York City. In her spare time, she loves to travel, try her hand at cooking (a work in progress), and find a great slice of pizza.
