Jessica Johnson is a Senior Educational Consultant for Teaching Matters with an expertise in elementary literacy. In her role with the Early Reading Matters team, she leverages her expertise in data-driven instruction, elementary education, and early literacy to support school leaders and teachers in strengthening the skills of their earliest readers. Jessica provides support in strategically using data to target instruction, as well as providing in the moment coaching and support to educators around literacy instruction to ensure that students are mastering foundational skills.

With over a decade of experience as a teacher and instructional leader in both district and charter schools in New York City, Jessica is committed to providing an excellent education for all students, regardless of zip code. Prior to joining Teaching Matters, she was a founding teacher of two high performing elementary charter schools, teaching in both Special Education and General Education settings. She went on to be the founding principal of a new school in Brooklyn where 95% of students were reading on grade level by 2nd grade and 100% of them passed the 3rd grade ELA state test. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Government from Cornell University and a Master’s degree in Urban Education from Mercy College through the New York City Teaching Fellows program. She has also earned a Master’s degree in Public School Building Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University.
