Adelfa Maria Hegarty is a Senior Educational Consultant for the Early Reading Matters program at Teaching Matters.  In her role, she supports school sites in developing the structures and systems needed to provide high leverage professional learning for teachers in evidence-based literacy pedagogy to improve early literacy development of students. Partnering with school leaders and teachers, she collaboratively analyzes data to drive instruction and engages in best practices in adult learning principles. 

Prior to joining Teaching Matters, Adelfa spent over 20 years in the field of education supporting schools as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, dean, and educational consultant in various district, charter and nonprofit organizations. Most of her experience was in Oakland, CA where she dedicated her time working in low-income neighborhoods. She has also supported teacher candidates pursuing a career in education. She is passionate about literacy and culturally responsive pedagogy and grounds herself in equity. Adelfa obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Anthropology from Florida International University in Miami, Florida and her Masters of Arts in Reading Instruction from California State University, Fullerton, California.
