Media Literacy

Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce communications in a wide variety of forms.  These forms could include images in print, on billboards, on television, or on the Internet. Media literacy includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical viewing, and the ability to make one's own messages using technology.  It is a set of skills we believe can and should be taught across the curriculum: it is literacy for the information age.

Workshops and Professional Development

Digital Documentaries

What better way is there to bring history and arts alive for students than to help them produce their own video documentaries? Digital Documentaries is a professional development program created by Teaching Matters that helps teachers to inspire their students through the medium of video, while meeting social studies and language arts standards.

The workshops and professional development provide educators with hands-on experience using computer-based “filmmaking” tools. This provides an overview of documentary making, script writing, storyboarding, production, and evaluating audience response. Best practices in media literacy, classroom management with computers, and guidelines for Internet use are fundamental to this program.
