Balanced Literacy and Technology

“First you learn to read—then you read to learn.”

Reading and writing are fundamental to a student’s success in school. Teaching Matters’ Balanced Literacy and Technology programs combine best practice in literacy instruction with 21st century tools and approaches. Used strategically, technology arms teachers with methods to tackle the components of their balanced literacy classrooms, from “read aloud” to "word work."

Information technology is transforming the world of writing. Technology is shifting the power of learning into the hands of students, providing them with new and motivating ways to master the building blocks of literacy as well as authentic avenues for publication.

Teaching Matters’ Balanced Literacy and Technology programs provide educators with classroom mentoring, web-based lesson plans, and live-online workshops. These professional development services are accompanied by “classroom-tested” lessons developed by New York City school teachers.
