About UsWho We Are

Teaching Matters is a non-profit organization that partners with educators to ensure that all students can succeed in the digital age. We target common challenges to student success with educational innovations made possible through the use of technology.

Why We Innovate For Student Success

Children today are entering an extremely competitive world that demands a highly skilled and creative workforce. Unfortunately, our education system has been slow to fully integrate technological innovations that have transformed every other sector of our economy and society.

A growing body of evidence reveals that technology helps all students – advantaged and disadvantaged – master reading, writing and math; engage in a more information-rich learning process; and improve higher order analytical and critical thinking skills.

Research has shown that technology in the classroom can positively affect student achievement and attitudes toward learning.

What We Do

To ensure student success, Teaching Matters partners with principals and teachers to set realistic goals and solve authentic problems. We offer comprehensive services to enhance school performance, instruction and student learning. In collaboration with front line educators, content experts and technologists, Teaching Matters develops innovative and engaging educational content that pursues a new standard for student success. This standard strikes a balance between core academic and 21st century learning environments to prepare students for their future.

We provide hands-on professional development in the use of these learning technologies. Professional development can be delivered in the classroom through intensive onsite coaching, offsite group training, as well as online.

How We Began

In response to a growing concern that a basic literacy gap would become a more serious technological and critical thinking gap for students in disadvantaged neighborhoods, Mrs. Elizabeth Rohatyn, a champion of innovation and education, sought a solution to level the playing field.

Driven by the belief that technology could be used to help engage urban students who were struggling to read and write, in 1994, Mrs. Rohatyn joined forces with former teachers, principals and technology experts to found Teaching Matters.

From its beginning, Teaching Matters has aspired to create learning environments where the use of technology makes learning more effective, efficient and engaging.

How We Work

Our work is grounded in best practices. For more than 15 years Teaching Matters’ model has proven successful for New York City public schools, the largest urban school system in the country.

We draw from our extensive experience in the field, the latest educational research, and state-of-the-art technology tools. As content innovators, we return to the classroom to test and improve new programs, ensuring they work in practice. As technology advisors, we help bring technology into the classroom in a cost-efficient, meaningful and seamless manner.

Teaching Matters has worked with hundreds of schools, teachers and principals in New York City and throughout the country. In all of our endeavors, we view innovation as social entrepreneurs, constantly seeking better ways to make student success achievable and sustainable.

Who Makes This Possible

Since its inception, Teaching Matters has raised close to $15,000,000 in private funds. We have been fortunate to partner with like-minded leaders who share our vision. Their commitment — along with crucial support from foundations, corporations, and individuals — helps us sustain student success.

Looking Forward

Teaching Matters is committed to playing a distinct role in the 21st century educational ecosystem. We are uniquely equipped to help schools close the gap between what is and what should be. Our comprehensive selection of programs and services are designed to hasten the arrival of digital age instruction in every school.
